ACEDA Captures Footage of a Local Red Kite’s Nest

ACEDA Captures Footage of a Local Red Kite’s Nest 1671

ACEDA was called upon by the Friends of the Red Kites to help capture footage of the spectacular birds during mating season in the hope the birds would nest and produce offspring. The fascinating footage shows the birds refurbishing their nest and laying three eggs.

In early May 2018, two of the eggs hatched, much to the delight of the vigilant observers and guardians of this rare species. Some footage from our ‘Kite Cam’ can be viewed here:

The Red Kites typically have a wing span of around six feet. They have a unique colouring with a rich, deep red body & wings with black tips plus a distinctive forked tail. The birds weigh the same as a bag of sugar and are scavengers: feeding on carrion, small mammals, worms and fish. Their natural habitat is woodland and open countryside.

ACEDA worked closely with the Friends of the Red Kites to install a bespoke surveillance system which was within the requirements of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981. Specialist tree climbers were contracted to assist in the installation of the camera, ensuring an optimum view of the nest.

The pair of red kites had used the same nest in the past three years but there was no guarantee the birds would use it again. However this year proved a success as the camera captured the bird’s refurbishing their nest, lay the eggs and hatch two chicks.

Harold Dobson, from the Friends of the Red Kite’s said, “We are delighted with the footage. It has generated lots of interest as people watch on in anticipation. The footage has allowed us to document and monitor behavioural patterns and habits of the Red Kites. ACEDA have provided us with an instrumental tool which has helped us learn a great deal more about these magnificent birds”.
